Photographer Robert Rodriguez Jr
We recorded our interview with Robert Rodriguez Jr in early March, right before Covid-19 shut down Beacon and the world. For those of us trapped at home, the episode offers a meditative listen on the artist’s relationship to nature and the solitary pursuit of a creative practice.
Robert is a landscape photographer, teacher, and author. His images have appeared in The New York Times, and his photography has been featured extensively by Scenic Hudson. He also offers courses and photography workshops every year in the Hudson Valley and national parks around the country.
Here’s what Robert has to say about his move from New York City to Beacon in 1998:
“I realized that instead of trying to compete with all the other photographers who are photographing landscapes around the world … if I live in the Hudson Valley and photograph the Hudson Valley, now I have the advantage of being here for any type of opportunity that comes along.
I said why don’t I focus on this part of the world? Because I’m going to know it better and understand it below the surface. And I wanted to share and capture the Hudson Valley the way the Hudson River School painters did, which is that they hiked it, they explored it and they lived here. They understood the nuance and the character of the place.
I look out the window now and if I see interesting clouds I’m out the door in my car and in 10 minutes I’m in a spot that is going to give me a unique opportunity, a.k.a. it’s going to allow me to get lucky.”
